Illusions of Competence
Rereading and highlighting feel like learning, but they train recognition, not recall — and the test demands recall.
The textbook is streaked with highlighter, the notes recopied neatly, the chapter read three times. The feeling: the material is in your head. You come to the exam, read the question, and realise: you know that there was an answer. You remember it was on the left-hand page, near the bottom, next to a yellow highlight. But the answer itself isn't there.
This isn't a memory failure or nerves. It means that for all those previous hours you were training the wrong skill.
The party where you can't introduce anyone
Picture this: you come to a class reunion. You look around the room — and you recognise literally everyone. That one sat at the third desk, she was always late, he played basketball. A feeling of complete certainty: I know everyone here.
And then you bring along an outsider and have to introduce everyone to them. And it turns out you don't remember the names. Not one. Faces — yes, stories — yes, names — blank.
You didn't lie to yourself when you thought you knew these people. It's just that "knowing" comes in two very different kinds:
- Recognition — when the thing is in front of you and the brain says "yes, familiar." Cheap, fast, almost effortless.
- Retrieval — when the thing isn't there, and you have to pull it out of the void, on a cue alone. Expensive, slow, strained.
Rereading, underlining, watching a lecture, going over a ready-made solution — all of it trains recognition. An exam, a real task, a conversation with a person, explaining to a colleague — all of it demands retrieval.
You recognised the face a hundred times and never once said the name. And then you're surprised at the test.
Why the brain lies so confidently
The brain has no direct access to the contents of its own memory — it can't scan itself and say "loaded to 80%." Instead it uses an indirect signal: how easily processing is going right now.
On the third reading the text flows smoothly. Not a single stumble, everything clear, the eye glides. The brain reads this smoothness and delivers a verdict: material absorbed. But the smoothness arose not because the knowledge took hold, but because the text is lying in front of your eyes and has become familiar to look at. Take away the page and the smoothness disappears — and all your confidence with it.
Psychologists call this the fluency trap: ease of processing is systematically mistaken for solidity of knowledge. And it works all the more strongly the more comfortable the way of studying is. Hence the paradox — the most pleasant learning methods turn out to be the most useless, while the unpleasant, difficult ones give the best results. Robert Bjork called such productive difficulties "desirable": the effort of retrieval isn't an obstacle to learning, it is learning.
What the research showed
In 2013 John Dunlosky's group published a large review that rated ten popular study techniques by their real, proven effectiveness. Two unqualified leaders — self-testing and distributed (spaced) practice. And at the very bottom, in the low-utility category, were exactly the techniques most schoolchildren and students use: underlining, highlighting, and rereading.
Even more telling is the experiment by Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke (2006). Students studied a text in two ways: some reread it several times; others read it once and then tried to recall it from memory without peeking.
Right after the session the rereaders did slightly better — and, more importantly, were noticeably more confident in their knowledge. A week later the picture flipped: the group that had practised recall remembered substantially more (on the order of 60% versus 40%). And the students' own predictions turned out to be the reverse of reality: those who remembered less had expected more of themselves.
This is the heart of the problem. The illusion of competence doesn't just inflate your self-assessment — it makes you choose the worse method, because it feels like the better one.
In another study, Karpicke and Janell Blunt (2011) compared recall with building detailed diagrams and concept maps — a thoughtful, respected technique. Recall won. Once again the students predicted the opposite.
The only honest test
There's a simple rule that cuts off self-deception: if you haven't pulled the knowledge out of an empty head, you don't know whether you know it.
A closed book isn't a final exam, it's a working tool. Every attempt to recall without support does two things at once: it shows the real state of affairs and strengthens the memory trace more than another reading would. Retrieval isn't a measurement of knowledge but its formation.
And separately, about mistakes. When you try to recall and can't, an unpleasant feeling arises — you want to peek quickly and get back to comfortable reading. But it's exactly this moment of strain that's most valuable: the mistake points precisely to the hole you'd otherwise have found on the exam. A miss in training is cheap; a miss on the test is expensive.
In practice
Close the source and retell. Read a section — close it and, in your own words, say aloud or write down what it was about. Not "roughly got it," but specifically: the theses, the mechanics, the conclusions. Then check and fill the gaps. This is the core of the whole article; everything else is variations.
Replace the highlighter with questions. Instead of underlining what's important, write in the margin a question this paragraph answers. Then go through the questions without looking at the text. The highlighter leaves you recognition; a question demands retrieval.
Explain aloud to an imaginary beginner. As you explain, all the holes surface on their own: wherever you slip into "well, it's sort of like..." — the chunk isn't assembled yet. Works with a real person and with an empty room alike.
Don't peek too fast. Can't recall it — linger in that state for a dozen seconds, let the brain work. An instant hint zeroes out the benefit of the attempt.
